Cream-colored Worms Found Around Home are Insect Larvae

“I started to see these worms around my house”, states this reader in his submission about the cream-colored worm-like creature pictured below. “I cannot seem to figure out the source”, he finishes, providing no further context. Now, the photo he sent us is quite blurry, so it is difficult to distinguish any of the physical characteristics of the organism other than its color and shape. From what we can see, this is probably some type of larva, though what species in particular is hard to say. There are countless species of insect larvae that have long, ovate, cream-colored bodies. Of the ones most commonly found in people’s homes, this would most likely be a moth larva or a fly larva (maggot), though that does not exactly narrow it down, given that there are thousands of species of moth larvae and fly larvae.

In situations like these, context is vital to figuring out the exact identity of the organism (though context is always important). For example, if these worms were mostly being found in the cupboards of our reader’s kitchen, feeding on dry food products like cereals or pet foods, we would conclude that these are pantry moth larvae. That said, if he found them in his wardrobe or on his bed sheets, we would say these are most likely clothes moth larvae. That said, if he found them in his garbage, crawling over a discarded piece of food, we might say these are some type of fly larva.

Regardless, the source of all infestations will almost always be at the source of food, as that is where the mother insect will have laid her eggs. So, if the source is trash or human/pet foods, throw any of that out in a garbage bin outside. If he keeps that trash inside, the infestation will just continue. If the source is clothing, launder that clothing. In any case, it is best to vacuum one’s entire home, in case there are eggs or more roaming larvae scattered throughout the home, and if there truly is an infestation, he might have to repeat these steps several times over the course of at least a couple of weeks.

To conclude, we do not know exactly what these worm-like creatures are that our reader has been finding around his home, though they are definitely some type of insect larva. Despite the fact that we do not know exactly what these are, we hope the information in this article proves helpful. We wish our reader the very best!
