The photograph she shared with us shows two of the worm-like organisms. Both are brown and have segmented bodies, and one of the specimens is curled into a C-shape. We are confident that these organisms are millipedes!
The ideal environment for a millipede is somewhere dark and damp. They usually live on forest floors beneath leaf litter and fallen logs, where they can eat decaying wood and debris. You may also discover them under flower beds or piles of mulch in your yard. When it rains a lot, their habitats flood and the millipedes migrate to a new location. The millipedes our reader discovered in her house probably crawled in through one of the windows or doors from the patio. They might be dead, or they might be faking it! Millipedes curl into a C-shape and remain motionless as a defense mechanism. Just in case the millipedes our reader found are alive, we encourage her to take them back outside. In order to prevent future visits from millipedes, we suggest that she make sure the windows and doors are properly sealed and screened when open.
To wrap up, we believe that the creatures our reader discovered in her home and garage are millipedes! These arthropods often appear after rain because their habitats have flooded and they are migrating.
