Dried Out Worms Found on Pavement and Wall of Florida Home

“I am finding these dead, dried worms on the pavement and on the exterior wall of my home”, writes this reader about the black, worm-like creature pictured below. “They range in size from 1/2” to 1 ½” long. I live in southeast Florida.” Right off the bat, we will have to say that we will not be able to identify this worm accurately, and that is because when a worm has dried out to this extent, their bodies look little to nothing like they did when they were alive: their coloration, size and shape changes completely. All we can do is give our reader some advice on how to keep worms away from his house.

In general, it’s good to keep piles of organic litter off one’s property, and especially away from the walls of one’s house. These piles include that of leaves, twigs, rocks, and mulch. The reason why removing such piles is important is because worms and worm-like creatures like to hide inside and underneath them when seeking shelter from the heat and damper conditions. As such, the more piles one has in one’s yard, the more worms will be attracted to it. Keeping such piles off his property might prevent the worms from even getting near our reader’s house to dry out and die.

That said, if these worms are earthworms, then there might not be much our reader can do about it, because then they are likely coming straight out of the grass before drying out. Typically, earthworms will surface from the ground after heavy rainfall, because their burrows fill with water and they need to come to the surface to breathe. Maybe our reader has experienced such rainfall, leading the earthworms to surface and seek shelter in our reader’s home, only to dry out before they find a way in. In any case, he is lucky that the worms didn’t make it inside.

In conclusion, we do not know what type of worms our reader found outside his home, as they are too disfigured to know at this stage. Either way, we recommend avoiding physical contact, as even in death, the toxins that this creature could have potentially secreted could still be on its body and could potentially cause an allergic reaction. Despite not being able to identify the worm, we hope that something addressed in this article proves helpful, and we wish our reader the very best!
