Clear Yellow Worm in Eye Could be a Flea Larva

“I found this in my eye, like just near the lid,” writes Aryaman in his submission regarding the translucent, worm-like creature pictured below. “I think it fell in it or something. Not sure if it’s a bug even. Please check and help with some answers. Hope it’s nothing of concern.” In our opinion, this likely is some kind of larva that fell into his eye. It looks like it could be a fungus gnat larva or a flea larva (the two look very similar). We cannot promise that it is nothing of concern, as there is the possibility that this poses medical concerns. Since we are not medical professionals, we are not qualified or legally able to identify creatures which could be negatively affecting someone’s health, nor can we, in good faith, tell someone not to be worried about a creature in their eye. Even if the creature itself was relatively harmless, it might not bode well to it in one’s eye.

What we will say is that if it is a fungus gnat larva or flea larva, then Aryaman needs not worry about them purposefully entering his eye: then it really did fall in there accidentally. Given that it probably fell in from his hair, it is more likely a flea larva, but not because it would have been attached to his scalp, sucking his blood. Flea larvae do not actually suck blood from mammals, only the adult flea does. Flea larvae eat dead skin, loose hair and fur, faeces, and dead insects, among other things. It might have been on his bed or pillow eating lint, then ended up on Aryaman’s hair, and then fallen into his eye. A fungus gnat larva does not make much sense; it is not even likely that it fell on Aryaman from a tree, as fungus gnat larvae stay on the ground, or rather underground, where they feed on fungi and algae in mulch.

With all of that said, we cannot say that it is a flea larva with 100% certainty or accuracy, given the potential medical concerns. But even regardless of the concerns, we have our doubts. Flea larvae are transparent, but usually they are not this yellowish color. Of course, given their transparency, it is possible that it looks like this because it is resting on Aryaman’s finger. Of course, Aryaman also does acknowledge the possibility of this not even being an organism, which is also possible. But given the worm-like shape of the body, and the bulbous, brown object at one end which resembles a head, we would say it definitely does look like an organism. Either way, if Aryaman is concerned about his health as a result of finding this critter in his eye, we suggest he contact a medical parasitologist, as they are qualified and trained to diagnose and treat these types of issues. To find a medical parasitologist or other health care provider who can actually help, our reader can do one or more of the following:
– Visit our parasite care resources page here: https://www.allaboutworms.com/get-medical-attention-and-tests-for-parasites

– Search for a medical parasitologist in their area using this directory of medical parasitology consultants: https://www.astmh.org/for-astmh-members/clinical-consultants-directory.

– Search for a local parasitologist by doing a Google search for “medical parasitologist (name of the closest big city)” or “tropical medicine specialist (name of the closest big city)”.

In conclusion, we cannot say with certainty what Aryaman found in his eye. Firstly because of the potential medical situation, and secondly because it does not exactly resemble our most suspected culprits. We hope nonetheless that something here proves helpful to Aryaman, and we wish him the very best.
