We just received a video from a reader. The video shows a thin reddish worm he found in his shower. We have included a screenshot from the video as a picture in this post. So far he has found two of these worms, says they are about 4 cm long, and translucent in some parts. He would appreciate any insight on this matter.

These worms are earthworms! While some earthworms are a darker red or brown color, they can vary in appearance. We recognize this one by its coloring, movement, and segments. The location of discovery was also a helpful clue.

Readers commonly reach out to us when they find worms in their bathrooms and showers. More often than not, we inform them that they have discovered earthworms. Earthworms are harmless to humans, and often end up in a shower or toilet by chance. Since they need a moist environment to thrive in, they might end up in a household by chance and then seek out the shower or toilet because of the excess of water. How might an earthworm end up inside a house? Well there are a couple of different ways. The worm might have gotten dragged in from outside on a shoe, piece of clothing, or attached to a pets fur. It is also possible that it crawled in through an open door or window, or under a door or window that wasn’t sealed tightly. There is also the possibility that it came up through a leak in the pipes that run under the ground. These pipes run through the wet soil that is home to earthworms. If this is the case, our reader might want to contact a professional to have a look at the plumbing system. However, before our reader takes any complicated measures, we recommend that he place the worms he found back outside near some soil. If he continues to find this worms to the point of it being a nuisance, then he could consider calling a plumber.

In conclusion, a reader found two reddish worms in his shower. We are confident that these are earthworms.
