Worm Found in the Toilet is Likely Drain Fly Larva

One of our readers sent us a video of a worm that he discovered in his toilet. We took a few screenshots, but they don’t provide a good visual of the specimen. Nonetheless, here is one of the photos:toilet worm

In the video itself, we have a slightly better view of the creature. But the combination of the distance of the camera from the specimen, the water, and the reflective surface of the toilet make it difficult to really understand what the specimen is. It is cream colored, tiny, and doesn’t appear to have legs or appendages of any sort. So, what did our reader find in the toilet?

There are many worms and worm-like-organisms that look similarly to the specimen our reader discovered. Inchworms, mealworms, and some species of fly larvae (maggots) are just a few examples. However, inchworms and mealworms both have legs, and since we don’t see legs on the specimen, we don’t think he found either of these. Also, a toilet full of water isn’t a suitable environment for an inchworm or mealworm. So, did our reader find some species of fly larvae? Probably!!

We think that the specimen is likely drain fly larva. Drain fly larvae are commonly discovered in toilets, as they feed on decomposing organic material, like sewage. We often see drain fly larvae that are translucent and black, but they can also be cream colored like the specimen our reader discovered. So, we aren’t 100% positive that the specimen-in-question is a drain fly larva, but we think there is a strong possibility. To get rid of drain fly larvae, our reader needs to clean out the grime that lines the toilet bowl and pipes, because that is where drain flies breed and feed. To do so, he can’t just pour drain cleaner down the toilet. He will need to physically scrub using the cleaning brush and a cleaning product designed to kill organic matter. Even if the creature-in-question is not a drain fly larva, cleaning out his toilet will prevent other specimens from inhabiting it!

To conclude, we believe the specimen our discovered in his toilet is a drain fly larva. The best way to get rid of these larvae is to clean out the toilet to eliminate their breeding and feeding grounds!
