Worm Found in Bread

We just received a cryptic message from one of our readers: “Why was this worm we found in my bread?” The reader didn’t include a photo with her question, so we have no idea what the worm in question looks like, or if it is even a worm. Without any information to go off of, it will be impossible for us to determine what the specimen our reader found in her bread is. Furthermore, if we don’t know what type of worm it is, we definitely won’t know why it was there in the first place. The only information we can use in solving this mystery is that the worm was found in bread. Without any other clues, we will offer some suggestions as to what the creature might be.

First, it could be carpet beetle larva. These “worms” are a rusty-orange color, pill-shaped, and have small hairs lining their body. These larvae feed on dust, fibrous materials, animal hair, and other particles found around a house. Bread isn’t usually one of their top food choice selections, but we have heard from readers who have found them in cereal, bread, and other pantry items before! We have written many posts on these creatures, so our reader can refer to any of those to see if this might be what she found.

It also might be mealworm. Despite their name, mealworm are also not worms, they are the larval form of the mealworm beetle. Mealworm larvae feed on dried grains, so they are sometimes considered pantry pests. Mealworms are small, light brown, tubular-shaped organisms. Our reader should compare the creature she found to the featured photo, which is of mealworms from a different reader’s question.

Finally, we think this could be pantry moth larva. These larvae are tiny, round, and cream-colored, and have a brown head. Pantry moths and their larvae feed on dried grains similarly to mealworms. If the worm our reader found is cream-colored with a dark head, it could be pantry fly larvae.

In summary, we don’t have a solid answer for our reader about what worm she found in her bread. Since we don’t have a photograph to go off, and the original question wasn’t filled with descriptions, we couldn’t confirm any of our ideas about what the specimen could be. If she sends us in a photo, we will have a much better chance at determining what it worm is!
