Worm Found on Skin and in Bathroom

One of our readers reached out to us because she discovered a worm on her daughter’s knee. I know what you are thinking, so what? We hear all the time about readers finding worms crawling all over them. So what makes this situation different? Well the worm was trying to get under her daughter’s skin. Ew! She said she also found more of these worms in her daughter’s hair bow basket, which is on the sink in the bathroom. So what are these worms?

The attached photo shows a pretty nondescript looking specimen. It is brown, thin, and probably less than an inch long (we aren’t exactly sure of the size because there is nothing to use for size comparison in the photograph). We don’t recognize the worm based off of the photograph, so what could it be?

Parasitic worms that burrow into the skin do exist. They are known as skin worms, or by their scientific name: Cutaneous Filariasis. Since we aren’t medical professionals, we cannot properly assess this situation, or speculate if the worm-in-question is parasitic. If our reader believes her daughter might be suffering from a parasite, she should bring her in to see a doctor as soon as possible!

That being said, we don’t know why the parasitic skin worms would be interested in some hair accessories in the bathroom. Perhaps the worms are interested in a food source near the hair bows, and one single worm ended up on her daughter randomly. Of course, that wouldn’t explain the intent to burrow into her skin. Our reader should investigate the area near the hair bows. She should clean the area thoroughly, focusing on any areas that are particularly grime filled, which could be serving as a potential food source to the creatures. In addition, if she is worried about her daughter’s health, she needs to take her to the doctor to be examined by a medical professional.

To wrap up, one of our reader’s found a worm trying to burrow into her daughter’s knee, and several of the worms in her bathroom. We aren’t sure which type of worm our reader discovered, but we encourage her to investigate the bathroom for potential food sources, and to take her daughter to the doctor’s office.
