One of our readers sent us a photo of a white worm-like creature she found while on a road trip. She said the photo was taken at a rest stop in West Virginia. After looking at her photo, we have determined that the “worm” that she found is a white grub.

Here is the photo she took:

A white grub is the larval form of a scarab beetle. Sometimes these grubs grow into Japanese beetles and there are quite a few different species of grubs. Grubs live in the soil and feed on plant roots. It is actually pretty difficult to tell if you have grubs in your soil until it is almost too late. They will destroy entire yards and gardens.

It is difficult to tell if you have a full blown infestation because of how the grubs feed from the ground up. You will begin to notice the changing in colors of your lawn or the leaves in your garden dying. You may also begin to find that animals have started to dig in your yard and garden. Grubs are eaten by pests like raccoons and skunks so these animals will dig to find them. This will cause even more problems for your lawn and garden.

Grubs live mostly in North America and are pretty easy to spot when they are on the surface of the soil. They have very large mouthparts that they use for chewing on the roots and crowns of plants. Most of them have brown heads and 6 legs.

Our reader has found a white grub. This grub will turn into a beetle when it is fully grown.
