Worm in Toilet Probably Earthworm

We recently heard from a reader who sent us a picture of a worm she found in her toilet. She explained that she found one worm in the toilet and another on the floor. She wants to know if it came from the toilet originally and ended up on the floor, or if it came from the floor and ended up in the toilet. She also wonders if it could have come from her intestines. What kind of creature did our reader discover?

The worm in question is long and thin. It looks like it might be brown, but we can’t say for certain because in the photograph it just looks dark. Despite not being able to notice many details about this specimen, we have a hunch that we know its identity. We think our reader is probably dealing with earthworms.

Earthworms are common household visitors. We hear from readers who discover them in all rooms of their homes, but we especially hear from readers who discover them in their bathrooms! Earthworms need moisture to survive, and there is often plenty of water in a bathroom. We aren’t sure the of source of the earthworms our reader has discovered. They might have come from the floor after sneaking in from outside through a door or window. They might have come through the pipes and ended up in the toilet. It is pretty hard to imagine an earthworm crawling up the toilet bowl from the floor and diving in, but we suppose it is possible! We are fairly certain that these worms did NOT come from our reader’s intestines. However, since we aren’t licensed medical professionals we recommend that she see a doctor if she is experiencing symptoms or is worried about her health.

To conclude, one of our readers discovered two worms in her bathroom, one on the floor and one in her toilet. We are confident these creatures are earthworms!
