What is this Fuzzy Brown Caterpillar?

She sent in a photo of the creature on the windowsill. There aren’t any objects in the photo to use for a size comparison, but the specimen appears to be quite thick, brown, and fuzzy.

Based on the photo, we believe she has found a caterpillar. Caterpillars are the larval forms of butterflies and moths. It can be very difficult to identify a caterpillar; especially without knowing it’s host plant (or food source). There are over 20,000 different caterpillar species around the world, and even within a species these creatures can have very different appearances.

One guess we have is that this could be a speyeria atlantis caterpillar. These creatures look similar to the photo our reader sent it, and they are found in many of the United States, including Massachusetts.  These caterpillars feed on different species of violets. However, we aren’t extremely confident with this guess.

In conclusion, a reader discovered some creatures in her home. While we are sure these are caterpillars, we do not know which type. We invite any other readers to weigh in if they have ideas of what species this could be.

What is this Fuzzy Brown Caterpillar?
Description
A reader who found two creatures in the same room in her house over the course of 4 months recently contacted us. The room was completely remodeled, and there are no soft furnishings, only nylon beanbag chairs and books. She also mentioned that the paint they used for the walls is milk paint, which might be an important clue. She finished by telling us that they keep the room warm, and that she lives in Massachusetts.
