Tiny Worms on Dresser are Fly Larvae

Share the knowledge

One of our readers found a bunch of tiny worm-like organisms on his dresser. He said they suddenly appeared out of nowhere, and he wants to get rid of them as quickly as possible. The photo shows a book with several tiny creatures on it. The creatures are extremely thin and small, and we can’t infer anything else about their appearance or manner from the photograph alone.  We are confident that our reader has found some type of fly larvae on his dresser.

The two types of moth larvae that we write about most often are moth fly larvae (also called drain fly larvae) and pantry fly larvae. Moth fly larvae feed on decaying matter, while pantry fly larvae feed on dry foods (like cereal, pasta, and breads). Both larvae types are extremley small, and we are be unable to tell the type from this photograph. However, we think it is more likely that these larvae are moth fly larvae because they are more common, as is their food source. We cannot say for certain, but we think this is a more likely answer than pantry fly larvae.

No matter if the larvae are pantry fly larvae or moth fly larvae, the trick to getting rid of these visitors is cleaning! If they are present in your home, that means their food source is also present in your home. Our reader should sweep and vacuum the floors of his house, wipe down all of the surfaces, and empty any trash receptacles. If our reader suspects that these larvae are pantry fly larvae, he should also give his kitchen and pantry some attention.

In conclusion, a reader asked us about some tiny dark creatures he found on his dresser. We believe he has likely discovered some type of fly larvae. In order to get rid of these tiny specimens, he needs to clean!
