Today we will respond to a slightly disturbing message we received from one of our readers. She wrote, “I have what feels like worms under the skin on my scalp. I can feel them moving and can feel them with my fingers. The worms move under the skin but also in 2-3 holes in my scalp. The worms roll in my hair and then my hair tangles under my skin. It has made a bubbly scar around my head. I also have some hair spine-like pieces embedded in my skin. I have a theory of when & how I got them but I would like more information. ”

We understand that our reader is going through an ordeal and is probably feeling quite uncomfortable in her own skin. We have written about flatworms that migrate to the scalp from the intestines, but we aren’t confident that this is what our reader is dealing with. Since we aren’t medical professionals, we don’t feel comfortable attempting to diagnose our reader or speculate on potential answers to her health questions.
Instead we encourage her to see a medical professional as soon as possible. If she has already been to the doctor and wasn’t pleased with the answers she received, we recommend that she visit a travel infectious disease specialist. These specialists are typically better suited than general physicians to treat complex and elusive cases. To find one in her area she can do an Internet search for “travel infectious disease specialist [her location]”.
To conclude, one of our readers reached out to us because  she has worm-like organisms living in her scalp. We encourage her to see a doctor immediately in order to get this sorted out. We wish her the best of luck in returning to good health.
