Purchasing Tubifex Worms

A reader recently commented on one of our posts about leech fields wondering where she can purchase tubifex worms in the United Kingdom. Before we speculate on where she can buy these worms, we will provide some background information for our unfamiliar readers.

Tubifex worms are also known as sludge worms or sewage worms. These segmented worms live in the sediment of lakes and rivers around the world. (Sediment is matter that settles on the bottom of bodies of water.) Tubifex worms are quite fascinating because they have the ability to ingest large quantities of sediment, then selectively digest bacteria, and finally absorb these molecules through their body walls. We find it quite amazing that these worms can selectively digest what they want to absorb after ingesting various items. Tubifex worms can also survive in areas that are heavily polluted with organic matter, which almost no other worms can do! So far, there are at least 13 known species of tubifex worms. However, these species are very difficult to distinguish from each other.

There are some species of tubifex worms that farmers raise commercially to be used as bait for tropical and freshwater fish. However, due to the location where some of these worms are harvested from, they may be infected with various diseases. Our reader didn’t specify why she was interested in buying tubifex worms. We aren’t familiar with any fish hatcheries or professional worm farms in the UK, but perhaps some of our readers are. We hope they are able to connect on our site if this is the case!

To summarize, a reader inquired where to buy tubifex worms in the UK. We do not know where she can make this exchange, but we are happy to provide some information about these worms!
