Oregon Giant Earthworms

Share the knowledge

A reader recently shared with us a fascinating photo of some giant earthworms he collected in the coastal mountains west of Salem, Oregon. The photo captures several Drilolerius macelfreshi  (commonly called Oregon Giant Earthworms) earthworms next to a measuring stick. This allows for us to see how long some of these creatures are, the largest one being over 20 inches long!

These worms can sometimes grow up to 3 feet long and an inch in width. They reside deep in the moist, undisturbed soils of forests in Oregon.

It is extremely exciting that a reader has found some of these worms because they are feared to be extinct. We hope this information gives hope to those out there that care about worms’ status!

In summary, a reader sent us some photos of Oregon Giant Earthworms, which are widely believed to be extinct.
