Long Black Worm Found on Floor is Actually a Brahminy Blind Snake

“What is this? I found it randomly on my floor (I live in South Florida) and I’m genuinely confused,” states this reader concerning the round, long, worm-like organism pictured below.

“It’s not segmented like a millipede, and when probed it moves like a snake. I’ve sealed it in a plastic bag and attempted to cross reference what it is with Google searches, but I’m actually dumbfounded.”

ATTENTION: GET PARASITE HELP NOW! At All About Worms we get a lot of questions about skin parasites, blood parasites, and intestinal parasites in humans. Because we can't diagnose you, we have put together this list of doctors and labs who understand and specialize in dealing with parasites in humans! That resource is HERE

We can confirm that this is indeed not a millipede: if it was, it would be seemingly gliding across the floor in the video our reader sent in (linked below) due to its multitude of legs that would sit on its underside. Likewise, as our reader has stated, the creature is not segmented as a millipede would be.

Now, it turns out that our reader’s comparison of this creature to a snake is not just a simile; this creature is indeed a snake. In particular, we think that this is a brahminy blind snake. Often mistaken for an earthworm, the brahminy blind snake is a harmless, underground-dwelling snake that, as its name suggests, is blind. Despite that, it has two very cute eye spots on its head that look as if they were drawn on with a Sharpie.

Although they are quite rare, brahminy blind snakes have been known to turn up in people’s basements, or elsewhere in the home, and that is likely because they are seeking cooler shelter. Or they ended up there by mistake. In any case, all our reader needs to do is move this one snake outside. Infestations of brahminy blind snakes do not happen, so it would be a surprise if he found any more of these.
