A reader wrote to us via Facebook about a worm mystery he needs help solving. The worm in question was found in the middle of the bathroom floor. He has no idea how it got there or what it is. The photo he included shows a long dark gray worm on a white towel.
At first glance, we think this worm resembles an earthworm. Earthworms are most easily distinguished because they are segmented. After zooming in on the worm, we are still unable to determine whether or not this creature is segmented. Therefore, while we are pretty sure this is an earthworm, we are not 100% confident.

There are a few different explanations for how an earthworm might have ended up on our reader’s bathroom floor. It might have been dragged in by a pet or on someone’s shoe. However, another possibility is that it entered through the plumbing system. Earthworms reside in moist soil, and if there was a crack in some of the pipes that run in the soil under the house, a worm could have gotten into the pipes and ended up in the toilet or bathtub and then crawled to the bathroom floor. Before our reader spends a ton of money investigating if there is a crack in his pipes, he should simply put the worm outside and see if other creatures appear. If not, how the earthworm appeared remains a mystery, but he doesn’t need to worry about his pipes. If creatures continue to appear, he might consider contacting a professional plumber.
To end, a reader found a worm in the middle of his bathroom floor. Based on the photograph, we think that it is probably and earthworm.
