Arrow-headed Worms in Water Tank

Hammerhead Worm

One of our readers sent us an email from Malawi, Africa. He said that he has discovered worms in his water tank. He described them as arrow headed and very slender. He said that they moved along the bottom or side of the tank, but do not seem to be swimming in the water itself. He wanted to know what could cause them to get inside of the water tank and if they are dangerous to his health at all. Without a picture, it is really hard for us to identify these worms, but since our reader mentioned that they are arrow headed, this could mean that they are hammerhead worms.

The hammerhead worms belong in the Platyhelminthes family of flatworms. They are carnivorous worms and they feed on earthworms. They do spend most of their lives in the ground, so it is possible that they could carry pathogens around with them. They are not generally a threat to humans because they never attack. The pathogens that they could possibly carry could be the only concern our reader should have. Also, we are not medical professionals.

It is very unclear how these hammerhead worms could have gotten into our reader’s water tank. They are not aquatic worms at all but, generally do try to stay in moist environments. They could have been looking for moisture and this is what could have led them into the water tank.

It would be in our reader’s best interest to make sure the water tank is completely cleaned out and he gets rid of the worms. We cannot say that they pose a health threat, because we are still unsure of their identity. It would just be safer if the water tank is cleaned and maintained.

  1. I sent in pictures of the worms in my shower that keep coming back. Couldn’t kill Them with Clorox. They just kept multiplying.
