Worm that Causes Burns Might be a Leech

Share the knowledge

A reader recently sent us an alarming message. She reached out to us because she found a strange worm in her bath water. She has discovered the same worms on her skin. They are mostly on her face but scattered all over her body. She explained that the worms are in a “bullseye type of lesion” but some of the worms are on the surface. She said that the worms appear and feel as though they have burned through her skin. Ouch! She sent us a couple of photos. One is of the worm in question, and one is of the lesions on her skin. (Warning: if you don’t want to see the lesion photo, do not scroll down.)

This is photograph of the specimen. It has a white body with two dark green stripes down its back. Based on the pain it was causing our reader, we think it might be a leech, but we don’t know for certain. Here is the photograph of our reader’s skin:

We are confused about a few of the details of this scary situation. Did the worm come from her bath water and burn her skin after she was in the tub? Or are the worms coming from under her skin and burning their way through to the surface? Unfortunately, we don’t feel as though we have a clear understanding of the specifics of this incident. Also, since we are not medical professionals, we aren’t licensed to give medical advice. We urge our reader to see a doctor as soon as possible!

In conclusion, one of our readers has experienced burning skin that she believes may have been caused by green and white worms in her bath water. Since we aren’t able to give medical advice, we encourage our reader to see a medical professional to get to the bottom of this mystery.
