Tiny Green Worm is Probably Larva

We recently received a photo from one of our readers, along with two questions. She discovered a single small green “worm” on the carpet in her son’s room. She wants to know what the creature in question is, and wonders if she should be concerned about finding it. Here is the photograph she included:

We really appreciate the photo, as having a picture usually helps us a lot when identifying worms and worm-like organisms. However, we don’t know any more about the creature in question after analyzing this photograph. As our reader informed us, the critter is very small and light green. We aren’t able to discern any significant markings or identify the presence (or lack thereof) of additional features like legs or antennae. So what could our reader have discovered on the carpet in her son’s bedroom?

We don’t know what this organism is. Based on its minuscule size, we think it is likely some sort of larvae rather than a worm. Perhaps it is a very small caterpillar. There are many species of caterpillars that are light green, so this is definitely a possibility. It might even be an inchworm, which is a caterpillar that is the larva of a geometer moth. Inchworms are very small and can be light green colored. Inchworms have legs on their front and rear ends, but no legs in the middle of their body. If this is true of the organism our reader found, it is probably an inchworm! If the specimen had legs throughout its entire body, then the creature might be a different species of caterpillar. If the specimen had no legs, it is probably not a caterpillar at all, but a different type of larva entirely.

In conclusion, one of our readers discovered a tiny green larva in her son’s bedroom. We aren’t able to identify the small worm-like organism, but we don’t think our reader should be worried about its presence since she only discovered one. She should simply put the creature back outside and make sure the windows in her son’s room are properly sealed.
