Worms that are on Porch Every Night

One of our readers sent us quite a few pictures of some worm-like creatures that he found on his porch at night. He said it seems like there are hundreds of tiny, blackish worms all over their porch every night. They seem to go away during the day time and then they come back at night. He said it seems like they are multiplying and from the pictures, they come out more when it rains. This family lives in the mountains of Virginia. Our reader wants to know what they could be and how to get rid of them.

Here are the pictures:

After we looked at the pictures that our reader sent, it is a possibility that these worm-like creatures could be a number of things. Rain has a tendency to bring out quite a few different creatures and although the photos are great, we cannot see any distinct features on these creatures like legs or tentacles.

The first creature that these could be are slugs. Slugs seem to come out very often when it rains. If these creatures have tentacles, there is a possibility that they have a slug infestation. If they are slugs, it is important that our reader simply covers up the places where slugs hide. They usually will hide in piles of leaves or wood. If there are dark spots on the patio, this is where they could be coming from when it rains. Slugs are found all over the United States and if they are coming out after the rain, this could be what the creatures are.

If these worm-like creatures do not have tentacles, there is a huge possibility that they could be a type of larvae or potentially fungus gnat larvae. Fungus gnat larvae have a tendency to travel in groups and form into long snake-like formations. These larvae generally live in more wooded areas and also are known to come out after it has rained.

In summary, our reader has sent us a few photos of worm-like creatures that are all over his patio. He wanted to know what they are and from what we can see in the pictures, it is possible that these creatures could be slugs or a type of larvae.

  1. The worms by the hundreds on my front porch every night are definitely not slugs or any kind of creature with legs. They congregate by the hundreds every night, and disappear every morning. They are present whether it is rainy or dry. They are very tiny, brownish worms about 1 1/2 inches long and smaller than a toothpick. I have never had them before, and I have owned the house about 18 years. I know what a slug looks like, and they are definitely not a slug, and they have no legs or antennae. Picked up, they are very active, and curl up….they appear to be harmless…but hundreds every night and totally gone in the AM.
